The Church on Spilled Blood is one of the most prominent and ornate symbol of the Romanov Czarist period. It memorializes Alexander II who was blown up in 1881 by a terrorist bomb while riding though St. Petersburg in his royal carriage. The site is the exact spot where Alexander died.
The official name is the Church of the Resurrection of Christ and oringallly intended as a private memorial for the Romanov family.

The Church was closed during the Stailist era and used for storing various goods from potatos to theater sets. The interior was damaged but was opened in the 1980's when the Soviet government was promoting tourism. The original church took 24 years to build and another 27 years to restore. |
